The only big con that tends to hit Toronto (that I know of) is the Rue Morgue's Festival of Fear http://www.hobbystar.com/fanexpo2008/horror/index.html which is part of a larger Fan Expo Convention. I've been eyeing a few conventions in the States that would be relatively close for me to attend, but...

Keep an eye out for Christmas lights when they come out (which is earlier and earlier each year). You can often find different coloured outdoor spotlights then. I hesitate to suggest putting plastic over other lights as it might melt the plastic (depending on the spot). As for fog machines, starting...

If you have fabric stores around (especially if you have a strip in town that has a few fabric stores), cheesecloth is usually cheaper than at craft stores. You can buy it by the meter.

Maybe if I had kids under the age of 4 and there were loads of little ones around my block, I would consider inflatables...perhaps just for a fleeting moment.
