Neither had I, so I followed the link. Directed by Dan Curtis, of Dark Shadows fame.

Apparently there is a documentary somewhere about Jonathan Frid. Made in 2021? There was a trailer when I clicked on Curtis's name. I'd love to see that.

It's okay, hadn't watched this version in many years. It's available on Amazon Prime.

The Jonathan Frid documentary is widely available, but you have to pay for it. Not looking to spend money right now. I believe it was made by a woman around my age who worked with him in hus post-Dark Shadow years.

Found the documentary about Jonathan Frid (Dark Shadows and Beyond, I believe it was called) for free on Tubi and just watched it. Only two ad breaks in an almost 2 hr doc. So enjoyable for anyone, like me, who remembers him from the old TV show. Mike would love it if he were still here.

It was very interesting to learn about Frid's upbringing (came from a wealthy Canadian family) and his career pre-DS. He really was a superbly trained Shakespearean actor and well regarded by his peers. Those who worked with him on DS said he always took the work very seriously and set the tone for the cast. Also he seemed to have a talent for friendship, and kept in touch with many of them for the rest of his life.

Those who spoke of it were not kind about the Johnny Depp version, but I think it's apples to oranges there. Depp and Tim Burton were going for an affectionately comic take. Tonally that movie is nothing like the old TV show, but it's fun if taken on its own terms. Not a re-creation, but an homage.

One word that came up frequently about Frid's Barnabas was his gravitas. I probably didn't know that word when I was watching him in the 60s, but I think it is a good one to describe his Barnabas.

There's a sequel out now, I think. I wonder if it's any good?
