Halloween wraps fear in innocence,
As though it were a slightly sour sweet.
Let terror, then, be turned into a treat...

I'll tell you what it's about, WickerMan. It's about MILARKY. POPPY COCK. MULE MUFFINS. HORSE FEATHERS. BOLONY, or just plain B S.
The world is NOT GOING TO END on December 12, 2012. The Mayan calender may end on that date, but our existance will not, I assure you. What do I base that on? You may ask. I base it on all the other 'end of the world' predictions that I lived through since the day I was born.

And I'll say it again Mike, the world will end. Absolutely and posituvely. It's happened at least 6 times in the life of this rock and it will happen again. We just don't know when. Could be tomorrow, could be in a blazillion years. Let's just hope it doesn't happen before next Halloween. I'm still going to have a party on December 20th next year.

I believe there will be a event that kills over million people in my lifetime but the world will survive at least for another 1 thousand years.

Personally, I believe the human race needs a culling. Too many people being a drain on the planet's resources. Wars no long kill as many as they used to, and we're doing too good a job at eradicating disease. I read somewhere that experts believe Mother Earth is capable of supporting no more than 10 billion people and we're almost there. 7 billion and counting. WHO knows? Now that those scientists have mutated the bird flu they may make 'The Stand' look prophetic. I prefer we find another planet and ship the excess population there. Would you go?

Re: Only One More Year, Folks!
My BIL works for NASA, and just this week he was explaining to us why it is going to be a long, long time before we can send anyone to another planet. (Specifically, he was talking about the improbability of a manned mission to Mars, the closest planet.) He said that right now, we have the technology to keep people alive in space for about a month, but it takes a year to get to Mars. If anyone wanted to go and come back, it would take two years. Not only is there the issue of oxygen and food and dealing with waste, but there is a lot of exposure to radiation that is unfiltered by any atmosphere in space. The materials they use to build space capsules are not sufficient to protect a human body against that radiation for such a long time.NeverMore wrote: I prefer we find another planet and ship the excess population there. Bottom line, we are going to have to solve our problems on earth. There is not going to be any escape hatch anytime soon.

Re: Only One More Year, Folks!
It's only been about 100 years since mankind's first powered flight and we now have a craft on the verge of leaving the solar system. If we don't destroy ourselves, and technology keeps increasing at it's current exponential rate, it wouldn't surprise me if some breakthrough allows us to land a craft on an extra-solar planet within the next 50 years. Remember, scientists are currently debating whether faster-than-light particles exist.Murfreesboro wrote:My BIL works for NASA, and just this week he was explaining to us why it is going to be a long, long time before we can send anyone to another planet.
I also don't think that NASA, or any government agency will be the driving force behind space colonization. On February 7th, SpaceX will make (attempt) the first commercial flight to the space station. If history repeats itself, people will be willing to brave the dangers of space for new opportunities. I wouldn't mind being the first person to place foot on 'Plymouth Asteroid'.

Well, it's certainly true that people have to dream it before they can do it.
I'm not too interested in off-planet travel myself, but there will always be those who are.

I would travel to any planets if it was affordable to me. I like going far away places.

Re: Only One More Year, Folks!
NeverMore, I didn't say that the world was "never" going to end, or that I thought it would go on for ever. On the contrary, I am a very devout Catholic, and I very much do believe in the prophecies set fourth in the Book of Revilation. I just do not believe it when ANYONE tells me, be he the Mayans, the Hopies, Web Bots or any one or anything else, that "............the world is going to end on December 21, 2012......" There will be a very rare astronomical event on that date. An event, in fact, that only happens once every 26000 years, but that is by no means, an indication that our poles are going to shift, or some 5 mile wide rock is going to fall from the sky, or some pandemic is going to break out, or we are all going to be baked by a Gamma Ray burst or solar flairs. What really gets me is that every time some 'cracked pot' predicts a date that the world ig going to end, some dishonest piece of &&%%$$##$$$ puts together 'end of the world' survival kits, and a whole bunch if very gullible people will spend thousands on a bunch of junk that they could have purchased at any Wal-Mart for a fraction of the cost.
So I will continue and presist in my assertion, that the Mayan Prophecy is a LOAD OF ....." You get the picture.
Mike
