Do you like 'em real or fake?

Get your mind out the gutter! I'm talking about pumpkins. Some stores have been selling plastic/Styrofoam (I don't know what they're made of) pumpkins for several years now; in fact, my mom bought one ages ago and still uses hers. It's nice because it's cost effective and I guess it's not wasteful depending on how you dispose of your pumpkins. Personally, I prefer the real deal. What do you guys like?

I confess to buying a foam one years back and by God, it's still in storage.

It wasn't 'fun' to carve because the flecks got everywhere but I still have a pristine 'kin to look at during the off season.

I don't know why I don't like foam pumpkins but I have a lot of pottery and ceramic ones that I cherish.

Curious.

I've never bought a foam one but I do have a couple ceramic ones. I prefer real ones though, for inside and out.

They are neat because then they can be inside and not get all moldy and smelly, but nothing beats the real thing.

If you have a great pattern you spend several hours carving, a foam one is great because you have it for a long as you can keep from crushing it.

Nothing can replace the fresh smell, the yummy feel and the sensational sight of a newly carved Jack-o-lantern on Halloween night!

I am a staunch TRADITIONALIST, so I MUST have real pumpkins in my house, but I do have a couple of artificial ones that I put on top of my stereo speakers in the living room. They look pretty real, and they don't rot. But Halloween just wouldn't be Halloween without a real freshly carved Jack O'Lantern with a flickering candel as a light source.

It's like the difference between an artificial Christmas tree as oposed to a real one. I MUST have a real tree, though a little tiny 6 inch fake tree on the flush box looks okay.

I'm not the one with the mind in the gutter, I wouldn't have even thought of that if you didn't say "get your mind out of the gutter." :p

In any case, I wouldn't know if I liked fake pumpkins/funkin's or not, because I've never carved them. I've got some nice harvest funkin's that you don't carve from a dollar store a while back, and they look nice displayed in the living room for halloween and thanksgiving.
I like carving pumpkins...but they're kind of messy. Sometimes they kind of make my hands feel itchy...so I've kind of wondered the past few years if I'm actually allergic.
Sometimes eating squash makes me feel itchy in the throat too and handling it makes me feel itchy.
So a funkin' might be a nice alternative if it turns out I am allergic. However, even if I am, it's only a minor itch, and not likely to last very long. It's not like I start breaking out like someone who's allergic to bees.
Technically I'm allergic to pet dander...doesn't stop me from loving my cats. So I doubt a minor allergy to pumpkins is gonna make me give up pumpkin carving. (If I got desparate enough I'd carve a turnup, potato or something else o.o)

I go with real both inside and out although I do have a few non-real decorations inside. I'd definitely consider fake for inside though because of the smell and mess.

I like both for different reasons. I like the real ones because they are fun to carve with our son and to bake and eat the seeds. I like the fake one's becuase they are alot easier to setup and the lights inside seem to shine brighter.
