Forgotten Decorations
Over the years, many have noticed holiday decorations of many different holidays that were left up. Overlooked by the home owner who had to do things in a hurry. ONe time wh ile out on my motorcycle, I saw a candy cane from that previous Christmas left up on a street lamp. A friend of mine totaly aforgot about a manger scene he had on his window sill. Another time while doing some cleaning one July, my father found an Easter Egg.
But the one that I remember is that in one of our basement windows, years ago, a card board Witch and Pumpkin was left up and forgotten about. It was mid July when I noticed it. It was all faded, from having been left up for so long. It was the m iddle of June, which means that it was up from October of the previos year, al the way through Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, etc, etc, etc.
How many of you have had that happen to you? Ever leave up a stray skeleton, or a forgotten about cardboard pumpkin or witch?

Re: Forgotten Decorations
I have left up Christmas and Easter window clings because I was too lazy to take them down.

There is a little plastic angel on a bush by my front steps. It has been there for 2 Christmases now going on 3. I figure, its made it this long and only I know its there; let it stay. It is sort of my good luck charm now.

Re: Forgotten Decorations
My mom left up a plush santa claus that is in a little hot air balloon. I also have a cat nativity up...but that's kind of left out on purpose.
I have left things up before though...of any holiday occasion...I forgot to eat the rest of my easter candy this year. And sometimes I just forget to put decorations out!

This probably seems crazy, crazy, a graveyard theory,

It's tunny, but when I ght home from work yesterday, I remembered a ceramic pumpkin in my bathroom that Iust to hold my tooth brush and comb, It faces the wall most of the year, but in October I turn it around so it's face shows.
A lot of people leav up decorations from various holidays for good luck. I still have the palms from Palm Sunday, and they stay up there until the first Sunday of Advent.

I have space in a utility drawer for the forgotten ones.
There's a little santa on a rocket ship, a cheesy plastic ornament with a bad 'painting' of the holy land, etc.

I had one of those Santa on a Rocked Ship ornaments once. I don't know what ever happened to it. I also had a life sized poster of Barnabass Collins once, complete with bared fangs. That got lost when we moved from Chicago to New Lenox.

Re: Forgotten Decorations
My problem is that my staunch observance of tradition is really turned off when I see Christmas lights on in February, or hear people playing Christmas music in July. I don't hold it against them, mind you, but I like Christmas in December, Thanksgiving in November, but I'll do a little bit of Halloween any time of the year. Likewise when it comes to fireworks. I usualy start putting together my 4th of July stash in late January to early February.
Besides, New Years Eve is a great night to light off fireworks.

Re: Forgotten Decorations
Well, I do have a few Halloween decorations that stay up all year long, but I gotta admit it does seem a bit annoying to see Christmas stuff left up all year long.
To me, what makes Christmas Special is keeping it once a year, not that I won't leave my Christmas Decorations out until mid to late January, or at the VERY least, I leave them up until New Years. At least I like to, I think my grandma just can't wait to get the tree down. I always thought it was sad taking down decorations.
In any case, I think it takes away from the decorations being special when you leave them up all year round, because to me the decorations just become every day decor.
And every day decor is nice, but holiday decor is special because it only comes out once a year. But some of my Halloween stuff is special for other reasons besides just Halloween, which merits it's place as being kept out all year round.
I think some of my christmas ornaments could be left out all year round, because some of my cat ornaments don't have any christmasy stuff on them, just a string to hang them with. If I had more room I'd consider it, but for now they only come out at Christmas time.

Re: Forgotten Decorations
I agree. But I have to admit, I don't leave any Halloween decorations up year round, but I do pull out one of my fake pumpkins when the 13th of the month falls on a friday. And I also do listen to my Halloween themed CD at any odd time of the year, but all in all you're quite right. Those decorations are SPECIAL because the holidays they represent falls at a SPECIAL time of the year.
As for the Christmas tree, I usualy go with a real tree, and there's a limited ammount of time that can be left up before all the neadles start to shed and you end up with a big mess, so that almost allways comes down on New Years Day. At that, I still have a huge pile of neadles to sweep up. Besides that, I work at a Community College. Once it's time to go back to work after Christmas vacation, I'm anxious to get on with the new year, and don't feel like having to take decorations down after a hard day's work.

Lost Easter Eggs = DOOOOOM!!!! I grew up with 4 brothers and 2 sister, for Easter we would keep it real and color real eggs and my mom would hide them *ahem* rather the easter bunny would hide them. Just so you have an idea each kid would color 8 eggs. 7 kids x 8 Easter eggs =56 disasters waiting to happen. One year my mom had the idea to hide one in the heater vent. Lets just say when winter rolled around and we kicked on the heater we figured out where that egg had gone. It stank soooooo bad.
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor

Re: Forgotten Decorations
I purposely leave Halloween decorations out all year-- I decorate the house in "autumn" year round. Okay, so I'm slightly lazy in that I don't like taking things out once a year to put them away in a month. It's so much work. I much prefer to coordinate my decor with my favorite holiday. *grin*
I DO play Christmas music in July, though.... No better time to think cool thoughts than when it's 114*F outside. Other than that, I think Christmas should stay in November/December. I HATE when it encroaches on Halloween.

Re: Forgotten Decorations
My niece likes to play Christmas music year round. She often does play it at any odd time of the year. To each his or her own. We had a similur experience with the easter eggs, too. The "easter bunny" hide an egg in an upper cabinette where the Advent Wreath and candle holder was stored and it was totaly forgotte about until it was the day after Thanksgiving, and it was time to get the advent wreath out. My dad opened that cabenet, and it was like ligntning struck the out house.
Speaking of Easter eggs, I was in a thrift shop looking for some cloths in a smaller size and for Halloween decorations, and I came across a bin full of old record albums for 99 cents each, I looked through thtm and bought a bunch of them to play, and on one of them there was a song titled "Easter Eggs." It was a religious song, but it was aslo one of the most beautiful pieces of classical choral music I ever heard. Litteraly made the hair on my arm stand on end.
