Dorm Room Help

Post by SIEFKA » Sun Aug 09, 2015 10:09 pm

I am off back to the University soon and I have always wanted a classy style dorm room for a guy. The idea that I have gotten is when I am older that I want to have a Halloween themed room with a giant 6ft fireplace, big windows, big curtains, lots of books etc. The style of room you see on the movie the Wolfman (2010). I wanted to get a picture that will go above my tv such a like a old ship, a lion, bears fighting, elks fighting etc. I want to make my dorm room have that classy/rustic feel that belongs in a horror movie. I was hoping that you others that love Halloween can help me with that! Also more ideas than just one poster are appreciated too as well! I will give more updates!

I just can't wait until next Halloween,
'Cause I've got some new ideas
that will really make them scream!
And, by God, I'm really gonna give it all my might!

I know dorms are small, so let me just let my brain rain here for a bit and you can take what you like.

I envision suede blackout curtains, candelabras (or lamps that look like those old gas lamps, as candles aren't allowed in the dorms).... gotta have a coat/hat rack-- not the wall mounted kind, but a stand. A leather reading chair with matching ottoman. Gotta have one of those wood bookshelves with the glass doors, a big fur rug... a writing desk-- oxbow style type furniture... ship in a bottle... maybe a rack of antlers.... depending on hunting/seafaring... shelves with resin skulls or candles, books and other assorted nick-knacks... one of those globes to plot your travels that also doubles as a liquor cabinet.

... and that's where this brain ends its rant.

Can't help you much there friend. I lived in the football dorm. Posters of nekid' girls and various empty alcohol beverage containers along with the pro football player posters that we someday envisioned ourselves to be were the
main décor.

Along with the TV, fridge, and monster stereo set. (Monster Stereo, was what we had back in the late 1970's, before the invention of MP3s and IPads)

I think I know what Kolchak was talking about with the big speakers. I've seen them before. Now a days you can get the same effect with some of the smaller speakers, but I think those big ones always looked pretty cool. It was empowering!

I grew up in the 90's when ipods and mp3 players were starting to be a new thing. I still remember people bringing in walkmans and CD players and sneaking one on the bus so we wouldn't have to listen to what was on the radio. A friend of mine brought hers in and we'd each grab a speaker. Those were the days.

I grew in a transitional period of technology. I even still remember the short lived laser disks.

If you're lucky Siefka you might get one of those dorms that has a lounge where your suite mates can hang out. I had something like that in one of my semesters at Alfred. You are a bit limited in what you can do, no Christmas lights or anything of the sort. I had a small fridge which I bought from a neighbor before going to college for the first time. I left it with my other Grandma (not the one I lived with) and I'm not sure if she still has it or not. I think it would be cool to get another one though. :) I like Jade's suggestions since you are a bit limited on space and what you can do. If you have the time and money to do it there's a lot you can do if you get creative. I would definitely check with the person in charge of your domitory to see what's allowed and what's not before getting started.

W/re/to appliances, I think most dorm residents have small fridges & microwaves nowadays. You do need to check with the school to see how powerful the microwaves can be, though. I recall at Vandy, they restricted my son to 800 watts.
