I am going to read Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire tonight. I know I have read it like several times but it never fails to get me in the mood for Halloween. It worked last year around this time so I am hoping Anne can work her magic again for me tonight.

Does anyone else read certain books to get themselves in the mood?

One of my favorite ghost books is

"The Phantom Cyclist" by Ruth Ainsworth

This is a collection of ghost stories with lots of great atmosphere and color. I bought a copy of this at a library used book sale, and have always loved it.

Two short stories of early Americana, that I've enjoyed reading again and again:

Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

Nathaniel Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown

"Young Goodman Brown" a short story, not a book. Click through the title above and you can read it.

I like to read Poe's short story "The Pit and the Pendulum"

... haven't had time but to read the first 10-or-so pages so far. *le sigh*

Oh, here's another good one. This book is strictly for kids, each story is really quick and simple, but there is some creepy stuff in it...

"The Most Famous Ghost Of All" by D. J. Arneson

And another one, a collection of stories and poems (some abridged):

"The Haunted House" edited by Vic Crume
