How many pumpkins?

Post by MHooch » Sat Sep 02, 2006 9:13 pm

How many pumpkins do you carve each year? I usually do 5 or 6. Last year I got carried away and did 14! That really kicked up the old arthritis, but the yard looked awesome!

I carved three last year and kept three whole for decoration. I wish I had the time and skill to do 14, I totally would. In fact, I might make it a goal to break your record . . . CHALLENGE!!
I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's. His hair was perfect.

Hey there,
Well speaking of carving pumpkins, I (or I should say my family) had 10 carved pumpkins and a couple whole ones. It was alot of work but it was worth all the smiling Jack O Lanterns!

I started carving the foam pumpkins so that way I can keep them longer and from year to year. I still usually get a real pumpkin or two but so far I've enjoyed being able to keep my pumpkins for more than a few days. I think the most I ever did in one year was 6, way below your 14. I don't think I have the patience to sit and carve 14 of them in a short amount of time. My hat's off to anyone who can do that many.

BlkAsh...How did you do with the artificial pumpkins? I tried two a couple of years ago, but they were really hard to carve, and didn't turn out so good. Did you use any special tools? It would be great to keep them, but that would just add to my decoration storage issues! :?

Well they are different to carve that's true. They took me a while to do but then again I'm kind of slow. I mostly used exacto knives to carve and etch the pumpkins. I also used an old serrated kitchen knife to cut out the bottom of the pumpkins so I could place lights inside. You do not want to ever put real candles in these pumpkins. I did find that some kinds of pumpkins left a line when lit up where the two portions were molded and adhered together so sometimes you have to work around that in your designs. Overall I’ve found they are worth the effort since you can keep them from year to year. I actually gave one of them that I had carved away for a prize one year at a party and it went over well. Anyhow how this helps some. Here is a link to a collage of some of the foam pumpkins I carved back in 2003. http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/mastyrash ... pg&.src=ph

We normally just do two; I do one and my brother does one.

I'd like to do more this year.

I do one for my own home, then about 4 or 5 to display at the halloween ball.

Wow you guys are pumpkin carving machines!! Especially Steve - that's incredible work :D

I usually carve 3 or 4..but this year I'm going to attempt a bit of a personal record and do 10  It just takes so long to gut the darn things and get them to the right thickness and stuff. Any top tips for mass JOL carving? :?:

... 14?!

If I'm lucky I'll do 1-2. One year, I did 4. I about died. Though, I got a new "toy" for carving this year... a friend told me about a dremmel tool at Lowe's. I splurged on it.

Hopefully that cuts down on carve time.... though, it'd help if I went back to doing the traditional styled p-kins instead of the danged 3D ones.... but they look SOOOOOO good!! ... but they take sooooo long >_<

Speaking of 3D Pkins... the pumpkingutter.com guy is starting to update his site! Whee!

... and I carved a couple "funkins"... hard to find a place for 'em during the year:
