Russian City Cancels Valentine's Day, Halloween

Post by wh2205 » Mon Feb 07, 2011 9:28 pm

The southern Russian region of Belgorod has reportedly canceled official Valentine's Day celebrations due to concerns about its impact on young people.

Under a decree reportedly signed by Deputy Governor Oleg Polukhin, authorities should not allow celebrations of St. Valentine's Day and Halloween at educational, cultural, and other institutions.

I have a Google alert for Halloween. Every time the word Halloween shows up in a news story i get an email. Most of the time it’s about a bank robber with a Halloween mask on. But sometimes it’s something interesting

I hate to say it, but it is Russia, and I think the present Russian government is still modeled on the old Communist regiem, which often places a lot of restrictions on personal liberties, especialy liberties involving eople gathering together in large groups.

It's likely that the Russians just don't make as big a deal out of Halloween as we do. I know that's lame, but the U.S. probably celebrates Halloween more then any other county does.

I'm pretty glad to be living where I'm living, and I would be at a total loss without Halloween. That's my favorite holiday.

I don't think they put a whole lot of stock in Halloween in Russia. Also, it's still, in many ways, a dictatorship. The people there just don't have the freedoms that we enjoy.
