Yeah it does seem like christmas getting past us makes it feel more full ahead on towards Halloween. I just can't seem to get into the mood for christmas this year, I feel like the Grinch! I hope the mood will set in more as it gets closer.

Well, I started playing Christmas CDs in my car yesterday. I have so many of them that I honestly think there are some I have never heard! So I am going to cull them this holiday season, decide which ones I really want to keep, and which ones I can do without. The one yesterday was a keeper--Vaughan Williams' Christmas Contata. The CD is titled "Hodie."

I couldn't stand it if the first holiday I had to look forward to in 2012 were Halloween. I try to find one in each month. January is a challenge, though. My husband and kids get Martin Luther King Day off during that month, and the stores start revving up for the Super Bowl toward the end of it, but there isn't really much in January after New Year's Day.

I try to have a tiny festivity for the family on Twelfth Night. One year I made a King Cake like they do in New Orleans, but none of us was blown away by it. Last year I made "Gift of the Magi" bread. It was almost too sweet for me, but the kids seemed to like it.

I dip strawberries into chocolate for Valentine's, and I try to do an Irish meal for St. Patrick's Day. I'm afraid the Irish meal is mostly for me, since others in my family are not overwhelmed by stuff like corned beef & cabbage, or Irish stew.

We celebrate Easter in a fairly big way whenever it comes, but largely we are around church during that time.

Then we have summertime stuff like Memorial Day weekend at the and of May, the Fourth of July. August is another month without a big holiday, but both my boys have birthdays that month, so that is something private we can celebrate. And there is Labor Day weekend in early September.

I generally start looking towards Halloween after the Fourth.

I agree with you, Murf. Halloween is my favorite holiday, but I can't just spend the entire year looking forward to only that one day, as there are lots of great days ahead of us in 2012 besides Halloween. Jaunary, as you pointed out is pretty dead, and that's especialy true for me. The truth be told, I can't stand January, but I do try to occupy my time either with a major house cleaning chore, or other project, or with new horror movie releases at the local theatre. This January, however, the 13th is going to fall on a Friday, so I will be celebrating "Little Halloween" on Friday the 13th, as I will be on April 13th of 2012.

I don't even bother with Valentiens Day at all, except to screen the "Charlie Brown" Valentines Day themed stories. I use to love that day when I was a kid, but right now there really is no significance for me. For St. Patty's day, however, I do a family dinner in March, and next year I'll actualy be having it on the 17th. Of course, I also love Summer time. My motorcycle and I spend a lot of time together between March and N ovember, and the 4th of July is also a very close 2nd to Halloween for being a favorite day. I love fireworks. I also have done plenty of picnicks and back yard barbecues, and the Sumeer time is the best time for barbecuing. I am tentatively planning a family gathering for either June or August.

Like you, Easter is a very high holy day, but most of the religious observances are during Holy Week. I attend what is called by the Catholic Church the Trudium. I attend the Mass of the Lords Supper on Holy Thursday, and then Veneration of the Cross on Good Friday, and then the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday. Additionaly I attend Mass on Easter Sunday morning. I do prepar a traditional Easter dinner when it's my turn to cook Easter dinner, but we usualy have that at my brothers house, and I have to cart it t here. We did have Easter at my house one year, but that was because my brother at the time was living up in Chicago Ridge, and my sister was having her basement remodeled.

When it's her t urn to cook, we usualy have Vegitable Lasagna (YUCK, YOUCK AND A THOUSAND TIMES YUCK!!!)

The Lutheran church we attend now has Holy Week services on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter morning, of course. Once, many years ago, I attended an Easter Vigil at the Episcopal Church. It was very dramatic and beautiful, but I don't think the Lutherans do it. I am not even sure if any Episcopal churches in our area do it. (The one time I went, we stood outside the church in a garden and sang hymns, and then at midnight, the priest lit a brazier to symbolize Christ's Resurrection, and we processed into the church for the rest of the service.)

The church we attend now does have a sunrise service on Easter morning, but I have never attended it. When our kids were little, they were always into Easter bunny before church. Now I guess we are just too lazy to get up. But my husband and I both sing in the choir, and we always have the two Easter services to sing, plus a big Easter breakfast at church in between services. I guess it is fair to say our Easter celebration is generally church-centered. The breakfast for the congregation feels like a big family gathering and is really very nice.

I agree with Murf. Halloween is my holiday but it gets incredibly boring just waiting all year long for it to come (not to mention lonely in my world since few share my enthusiasm). I'm a little bummed that it's passed already, but I'm starting to come around on the winter holidays. I'm not much for Thanksgiving (my family needs a new tradition--that food makes me want to gag!) but I like shopping on Black Friday and Cyber Monday so I'm getting geared up for that. Most of the really excellent movies get released around this time of year so I'm also looking forward to that (I hope this is Fassbender's year :)). I like getting to graze on New Year's Eve and Super Bowl Sunday and even though I'm in Dallas, I love New Orleans and Mardi Gras so I always make a group of friends celebrate it with me.

Halloween comes once a year so we Pumpkinheads have to find little things to keep ourselves sane during the wait :)

I find things to look forward to throughout the year also. I'm really looking forward to Christmas now & New Year's, however i'm not looking forward to the dullness of January!

Well Jack, I'm sure that there will be some terrible horror movies that are released in January. Go see them for a laugh :)
