We need some help on our Halloween theme!

Post by johnsoneliza52 » Sat Jul 30, 2016 6:50 pm

Well, to put it midly....we are soooo far behind in building our Roman theme...I literally have 1..count 'em ...1 prop built.
We changed the idea of the "coloseum" ...to this:

and we thought we could make the pillars out of these:

no idea is working...each pillar section that we have tried still looks like buckets piled on top of one another.
My next thought is to paper mache the "lines" in the pillars on each bucket, flowing from one bucket up to another to simulate 1 solid pillar.
I have been to Home depot a hundred times...there doesn't seem to be anything that would cover up the fact that this is only a row of buckets screwed together.
I thought about corraguated cardboard as a wrap...no go
We think we have to use the lids on each bucket so that we have something to screw the next top bucket to.

Any ideas, friends?

I have no idea what your budget is, but these tubes are used in construction for various applications.

They come in different diameters and lengths, some are water resistant.

I'm not suggesting that you pour actual columns, but you could paint these white and use them as 'columns'?

You could try molding some chicken wire into tube form and then paper mache. Wouldn't be great if it rains though. Link to some instructions for this, below

Andy, we looked into those...I can use those for the base of the little "pillar" platforms that busts of Romans sit on. I bought one for my Medusa... it was about $7, but it's only 4 feet tall...we looked into that, but it would be cost prohibitive.

Dark and Stormy (love the name)
We are paper mache experts...lol....That might be the route to go with, but I guess we hadn't thought about the chicken wire as a wrap for the columns. I will have to try that this week and see where that goes. That might be the ticket!!!

Thanks all!

It makes me happy that someone I know, even digitally, can say "...my Medusa." and it doesn't sound the least bit strange.

At least to me, that is. :)

Hey Andy
They are $7.34 a piece, at Home Depot...more than we wanted to spend, of course; but there was no other way to come up with a smooth column.
We are going to put a small box on top of these pillars, then two more feet of the sonotube...another larger box..then the top.....we shall see!

I have no suggestions for pillars but that Medusa is stellar!
