What are you Carving this Year?

Do you have a special way to carve a pumpkin?

What are you Carving this Year?

Post by jadewik » Thu Oct 04, 2007 4:21 pm

Just curious to see if people already have plans for what to carve, what those plans are, and how many pumpkins you're carving! =)

I was going to carve The Hermit tarot card... making my own design of a female (like in the 10-virgins parable) holding an oil lamp and staff. You wouldn't believe the religious connotations in tarot cards. I researched it first to see which would be a good representation. I don't know if I'll stick with that.... because I recently had another idea to do a Taj Mahal-type design in 3D, which I swear will be the death of me since they take a long time and it tweaks my back leaning over a p-kin for 8 hours. ugh... I die.

I looked around the internet, and I found several good patterns, but I didn't like everything about them. I thought that either they lacked the detail I was looking for, or they just wasn't what I wanted.

But based on something I saw, I created this\/

...
Instead of the usual caving, which cuts out the skin and the rind of the pumpkin... I'm going to try working with just removing the skin, and leaving the rind.

I'm also toying with the idea of having two or three images on one pumpkin, so a different image can be seen as the viewer sees the pumpkin from different angles in the room.

Panoramic p-kins are fun. I did one of those about 4 years ago... one scene all the way 'round the p-kin. It was pretty nifty.

I really like the extra teeth you added to the pattern too. It does make it more menacing. =)

I've been doing the rind-sculpting (not to be confused with just shaving the rind down) for 2 years... 3 p-kins. I need to find a better tool that will enable me to cut bigger chunks out. Ugh. I spend more time shaving away big spots than I do actually sculpting. I'm hoping my new toy.... err... tool will help me with that this year. =)

Well the eyes were enlarged and a slit pupil added, the hair was made larger, the upper lip got a bit bigger to meet up with the nose a bit better, (the additional teeth was something I added,) the fangs made a bit bigger and moved around slightly, the brow got a bit more shadow, an additional wrinkle next to the upper half of the mouth, even the chin had a bit of an "alignment job done to it.

But you made a good point. Maybe I can tweek a few other designs, and make several faces that come together for a full 360 degree viewable Jack-O-Lantern. Since I only plan to peel the skin and not sculpt the rind, it might be a good project to get into.

What kind of patterns are you looking for? I have about 10 pattern books I've amassed over the years. I might have something you'd be interested in carving.

Well, I have a demon already as you know. I think a Skull would be cool, and I was thinking about a haunted house and that's as far as I got (at the moment.)

But I'm not ruling out "bailing" on the demon. Skulls all around the pumpkin would be cool, if I can get a lot of different skulls. Even some small ones to fill in the gaps, perhaps.

The pumpkin is 34" in diameter.

I can resize images and do each as a separate "skinning".

I plan to put a lightbulb(s) inside, so there's no need for a candle chimney.

I like the old traditional carvings. Something very similiar to what you see when Part 1 or 2 of Halloween. Anyone else like traditional carvings?
All alone in the woods with nothing but the smell of smoke from the camp fire, cracking leaves as you walk and seeing your breath from the cold crisp air. Halloween is my favorite time of the year!

Traditional P-kins are still savvy. That's cool you still carve 'em that way. =)

Whoa now, reignman, who do you think you are??? Everyone is entitled to his own opinion of course, but your bitterness is completely uncalled for...and this is your 1st post?? Lighten up!! Wolfman is actually a very cool guy!

Besides, dude, that pattern is on the internet...you can blame those folks for making it available to everyone if you have to be angry here.

I percieve that as a personal attack.

I could of gone to the public library and simply photocopied the pattern and used it for $0.05. AND it would of been totally legal!

So what's the difference here?
Because I based my pattern on something that already exists?
Because I altered it to suit my tastes? Don't tell me you NEVER altered clothing or anything to suit your tastes.

Don't tell me that I'm claiming this to be my original work, because you already know I've based it on another piece. THAT'S what a copyright is all about. To PREVENT someone from making money off YOUR idea.

Show me where I'm striking it rich here. Thing is, I'm NOT claiming that the original is mine in any form. If I was, THAT would be stealing.

Engineers build structures that are based on other structures, but do they get reamed? Of course not.

Lets look at the notion of the axworthy ghost. People take their own spin on the idea, but do they get repramanded? Nope.

People carve pumpkins all the time. But do they get a dose of hate because "carving pumpkins isn't their original idea"? Again... no.

Show me where I claimed that this is an original piece of work.
I didn't. I was up front and told everyone I found it on the internet.

Show me where I'm attempting to sell the pattern.
You can't, because I'm not trying to sell the pattern.

Show me the profits I'm making from sales.
You can't. Because sales do not exist.

Not to take this off topic, but err... us engineers DESIGN things and there are standards and standard details and specs we design to... the building is all built by contractors... and most of building design is done by evil architects.

Before either of you had replied, I sent a PM to hauntmaster about the post. I guess you guys were too fast for him!

I wouldn't take the post too offensively. Number one, the person is new and that's his/her first post. It's obviously not a great first impression. Wolfman has been 'round for a while and hasn't caused any issues to my knowledge. Secondly, although you admitted to going online-- use of the image in question most likely falls under the creative commons license anyway-- IE- Something along the lines of you being able to use the image, view, modify it, etc... provided you don't profit from it in any way-- and you're not profiting from the image.

Creative Commons is also why people are able to use artwork for avatars without getting sued. There's just no way to police it.

Furthermore, I DID buy the pattern... and I believe that I emailed a PDF scan of the pattern I purchased. So really, their arguement is completely and utterly moot.

Shall we resume talking about our creations? =)

You, of course ARE entitled to your opinion. But it does seem to me that you signed onto the forum just to complain about this one subject.

Whats done has been done. I doubt I can do anything to correct for this.

So, outside of you're complaint, reignman40. How do you suggest I go about correcting this situation?
