Re: What do you hand out on Halloween?
With the exception of butter scotch and peppermint, I am no huge fan of hard candy, either. I do like Tootsie Rolls, caremels and anything chocolate. The peanut butter taffy can be good if you get it fresh enough. The problem is that 99 times out of 100, you get it when it's very stale. Then it's like eating a peanut butter flavored tennis shoe soul.

Last night 'twas witching Hallowe'en
Dearest; an apple russet- brown
I pared, and thrice above my crown
Whirled the long skin; they watched in keen;
I flung it far; they laughed and cried me shame
Dearest, there lay the letter of your name!

I pared, and thrice above my crown

I flung it far; they laughed and cried me shame
Dearest, there lay the letter of your name!

I like it if it's nice and fresh. It it's stale, it's for the lack of word, THE PITS. That's why faffy of any kind is not the best choice for Trick or Treat. It gets stale, and then it's just about inedibale.

Re: What do you hand out on Halloween?
As a kid I found a sad little collection of candies left from the previous year among the decorations. There were several of those orange and black taffy chews and they were unchanged. After the apocalypse it will be the roaches and the taffy sitting on a stack of Twinkies.
Oh, your so cool, Brewster!

Re: What do you hand out on Halloween?
I don't think I have a set thing I give out, but I do try to make sure I give out candy our family likes to eat, because we often have it left over.
Some years I give our caramels and apples, although the authorities are always warning kids not to eat unwrapped items, which the apples are. But the Trick-or-Treaters seem excited about the apples when I do that.
Basically I give out chocolates (usually Hersheys) and something fruity or tart, like Sweet Tarts, because my husband loves those. Also Jolly Ranchers.

Those "orange and black taffy" are actually called Mary Janes. They're a molasses candy... and I think they're d-licious!

Re: What do you hand out on Halloween?
Like I said, taffy is really great when it's nive and fresh, but I would not hand it out for Trick or Treat because the differenc between delicious taffy and stale taffy can be an hour out in the cold and damp.
Tootsie Rolls were allways a favorite of mine as it is for other kids, and they're cheap.
