Putting the spirits to rest (post halloween tradition)

Post by adrian » Mon Nov 02, 2009 2:00 pm

One tradition i've always went by is that after halloween we "put the spirits to rest." My grandfather taught me this... god i don't know when.. but for me.. halloween is over once you fall asleep (candle lit in jack o lantern/s) then you wake up and the candle/s are out. THAT is the end of HALLOWEEN.

Now we say that the Jack o Lanterns bring hold their own spirit and bring with them others to celebrate the holiday..
so on All Saints Day.. we take the dark faced jack o lanterns to the edge of the woods and smash them... releasing the spirits back to their resting place. if this is not done... the spirits of halloween will be locked at our house for another whole year... the spirits stop celebrating and become angry bc they hadn't moved on. they stick around and not only haunt us but bring us bad luck and mis fortune for a year!

just a little something fun we do as a post halloween tradition while we take down the decorations.
Last night 'twas witching Hallowe'en
Dearest; an apple russet- brown
I pared, and thrice above my crown
Whirled the long skin; they watched in keen;
I flung it far; they laughed and cried me shame
Dearest, there lay the letter of your name!

wow, thats pretty cool Adrian, I dont live near a woods so I hope the trash man smashes them good at the landfill and I hope the spirits are happy with that......I had to toss them in the trash for the trashman today, the spirits were drawing gnats

To be honest,, that sound like more than fun. That could be a serious tradition. You know i might use that. Sounds really cool.

But i might change mine... Every year we have a bonfire so to "Release The Spirits" I could burn them on the bonfire. It could be like the 12 days of Christmas,, where you can take your decorations down before the 12th day!! :D except as 333 is half of 666 then the 5th November is 6 days later :D Half the days :D

I saw a website about a family that buries their pumpkins in a 'Pumpkin Cemetery' in their backyard or basement. I'll see if I can find it.

That's a pretty neat TRADITION, Adrian. I do something simular. I celebrate Halloween all through the month of October, and I consider All Saints Day and All Souls Day to all be a part of the Halloween holidays. Anyway, I don't smash any pumpkins, but I do attend the service for the dead every All Souls Day at St. Patrick's Church. I will be attending Mass and the servie for all the dearly departed for the year of 2009 tonight after I get home from work.

I love it too, Adrian. Thanks for sharing this! :)
I'll just have to start a new tradition.
We usually would set fire to them, like someone said. I like the idea of it.
Magical.
