Re: Hey, anyone got some pumpkins yet???
The in-town lot that shows up every year finally opened today!
I pass it on my commute every day. I don't buy there, but I enjoy seeing it each year.

Actualy, those lots have a much better selection and quality then the grocery store does. Better yet, there's a place about an hour away from where I live where you can go into a real pumpkin patch and pick your pumpkin/s right off the vine. My nephew took tha little ones there one year, and they had a blast. I was with them. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me, so there are no pics. I swear that the next time they do something like that, I'll bring the camera.

Tennessee was underwater for a lot of the season. Epic flooding in May, and another, smaller flood in August. I don't think most people realized how bad it was around here back in May because of the Gulf oil spill, which pushed everything else out of the news. The Opryland Hotel (a huge convention center and real showplace) is still not open. Neither is the Schermerhorn Symphony hall; and the Grand Ole Opry is back at the Ryman, where it started, rather than in the Opry House they've occupied since the early '70s. Lots of people are still trying to rebuild their houses. Roads are still out. One man, presumed drowned in the flood, has never been found at all.

Have you heard when the Opry Mills mall is opening back up?Murfreesboro wrote:Tennessee was underwater for a lot of the season. Epic flooding in May, and another, smaller flood in August. I am taking a group of Middle School Beta club kids to a convention in Nashville this Nov., and am trying to think of someplace to take them. We will be in that area.

Re: Hey, anyone got some pumpkins yet???
The Opryland Hotel, which is adjacent to the mall, will be back open this November. They were stringing the lights for their Christmas display this summer, same as always. I am not certain of the date for them, though I believe they may be slightly ahead of schedule. However, the Opry Mills Mall is another story. Sometime in 2011 for them. And my husband heard from a man who is working on the reconstruction there that they will be open later rather than sooner. I believe part of their issue is that their insurance provider(s) don't want to pay, or to pay more than they already have.
There are businesses across the street from the hotel that I think are still open. There is still a shopping district out there, but it is across a busy street. And of course, the hotel itself used to have a lot of shops and kiosks. I suppose it will again.
The Frist Art Museum downtown is open and is free for people 18 and under ($10 for adults). I believe they are soon to open a big French impressionist exhibit, so that might be a possibility for your Beta Club group.
The Hermitage up in Lebanon is a very interesting historical attraction. Of course, a person has to pay to tour it, too, and I don't know what the current fees are there. But it is a very attractive house, Andrew Jackson's home, of course, and I think he is buried there. There are also some slave cabins preserved or reconstructed out back, so people can glimpse that aspect of antebellum life, too. (Lebanon is basically suburban Nashville, and there is a train service that runs between the cities called the Music City Star, but I have never ridden it. I also don't know how far it is from the MCS station out to the Hermitage.)
If you all wanted to take a bus trip down to Columbia, James K. Polk's townhouse is extremely interesting as well.
The Sportsplex adjacent to Centennial Park (on West End Avenue) has ice skating, but I haven't been there in so long that I have no idea of the fees at this time. Also, you'd have to call about public skating, or scheduling a private session for a group.
Hillsboro Viillage is a charming shopping/restaurant area within walking distance of Vanderbilt. It's not too far from Belmont, either. I don't know if you'd be taking your kids to either one of those colleges. If you take Hillsboro Road (21rst Avenue) out from Hillsboro Village (away from Vandy), you hit Green Hills, which is also an upscale shopping district.
Where are you all going to be staying?
ETA: Just talked to my husband and mentioned your interest in things to do with school kids around Nashville. He said the Bass Pro Shop at Opry Mills Mall is opening this weekend. It is the only store that has reopened out there so far.
He also mentioned the Tennessee State Museum, which is free, like the Frist. It is located downtown, too, I think around the TN Performing Arts Center (TPAC). That's around 3rd or 4th Ave. North. The Frist is farther up Broad Street. You would need a bus between the two.

Re: Hey, anyone got some pumpkins yet???
I got some more Mini Pumpkins, in addition to the Jack Be littles my mom gave me.
I'm not sure if these ones are jack be littles or not though. They're a little bigger and more...pumpkin-ey. (Jack be littles are actually gourds, I don't know what these are. Miniature pumpkins, but that's about it)

This probably seems crazy, crazy, a graveyard theory,
A ghost tried to approach me and got leery.
Ask him a question and he vanished in a second...

There were a bunch of pumpkins for sale at the Harvest Days Festival in my town last weekend. I was too buey taking photos to buy any, unfortunately. By the time I had time to buy one they were all sold out.

Re: Hey, anyone got some pumpkins yet???
Anyway, back to my very first post on the front page of my own threat.... remember when I stated that my step brother was so stupid for buying a pumpkin that was too early.... Guess what? His pumpkin is beginning to turn a little bit rotten and has a few tiny molds around it. So I asked him, "What are you going to do with it? It doesn't look so good". He said, "Go ahead and carve it! I really don't care about that pumpkin!" Well... I already carved it, taking stuffs out of the pumpkins and saving the seeds for me to roast the pumpkin seeds anytime. After I was done carving it, I put it on the diner room table and lit it that is pretty very close to the living room where I can watch TV anytime and look up at JOL.
Me, my gf and my grandpa were talking about getting 3 large or extra large pumpkins in about 3 weeks later... also, my cousin will get me two more pumpkins for us - that makes 5 pumpkins would sit outside in the front porch!
